North Coast Weekend Guide

August 30, 2010

Redthreat North Coast Music Festival Weekend Guide

Dubbel Dutch : Thursday // Midnight // Evil Olive

Here’s the preparty. Dubbel Dutch, a pioneer in a post-dub world, is responsible for groundbreaking work, like the recent, Throwback EP. Dubbel Dutch will also be spinning Ustream’s End of Summer Party, Saturday- RSVP.

Makango – Angolan Kung Fu (Dubbel Dutch Remix)

Paul Kalkbrenner : Friday // 5:30 PM // North Stage

I’m ecstatic that Paul Kalkbrenner will be playing Union Park. Kalkbrenner specializes in producing somber, penetrating Techno that tears your heart out.

Paul Kalkbrenner – Aaron

Chemical Brothers : Friday // 8:30 PM // North Stage

Has anyone thoroughly dominated the dance music world with each release like these two have? The answer is no. The fact this is a Live set is so crucial…

Chemical Brothers – Swoon (Lindström and Prins Thomas Remix)

Laidback Luke : Saturday // 3:30 PM // Coast Stage

A huge name that doesn’t come aroud often, Laidback Luke tops the Beatport Charts routinely. Check out this Moby track, and then check out Moby himself.

Moby – Wait For Me (Laidback Luke Remix)

Benga Daedelus : Saturday // 4:40 PM // Coast Stage

Update: Benga wasn’t able to make it, so Daedelus lent a hand in dropping some heavy bass music. He wore a blue suit, too, which was way-ballin’.

Katy B – Katy On A Mission (Produced by Benga)

Boys Noize & Kissy Sell Out : Saturday // Late // Bottom Lounge

Crazy afterparty Saturday night. Get tickets- Fast. Boys Noize & Kissy Sell Out are going to be playing Bottom Lounge. Let’s wake up with some shell-shock.

Goodbooks – Leni (Kissy Sell Out Remix)

Holy Ghost! : Sunday // 4:30 PM // North Stage

DFA is in the houuuse, Yeah. Try it in a Daft Punk voice, like in “Teachers”. Or not. If you liked LCD Soundsystem at P4K, you owe this to yourself. Trust.

Holy Ghost! – On Board (Friendly Fires Remix)

Claude Von Stroke : Sunday //5:30 PM // Coast Stage

If Von Stroke wasn’t so amazing, I would have overstated my adoration for his work. He’s the king of Dirtybird! Check out this Afterparty with Green Velvet!

Chilly Gonzales – I Am Europe (Claude Vonstroke Remix) {youtube}

Flying Lotus : Sunday // 6:30 // North Stage

I feel like every time I do a festival guide Flying Lotus is a highlight. Probably because he kills every stage he plays on. Brainfeeder never fails.

Lil Wayne – A Milli (Flying Lotus Remix)

Vampire Weekend : Sunday // 11:00 PM // Aragon Ballroom

Vampire Weekend will be playing with Beach House & Dum Dum Girls. I got 4 tickets to this. Just need to figure out who’s going with me!

Vampire Weekend – The Kids Don’t Stand A Chance (Miike Snow Remix)

Tuesdays Are Famous!

Best In Class

August 29, 2010

Late Of The Pier – Best In Class (Soulwax Remix)

Moonlight

August 28, 2010

Aww man, some of these tracks I come by are so good. What could be better than this Funk Ferret edit? The original never sounded so good- how could it? Polish off the dust on this one and you’re good to go.

Marvin Gaye – I Heard It Through The Grapevine (Funk Ferret Edit)

Seiji did a remix of Toddla T‘s “Better” a while back that was posted only once from where I can tell, by ChromeMusic. Classy & clean, with an uplifting and intimate R&B stylized chorus line flowing through it.

Toddla T – Better (Seiji Remix)

Another winning RAC remix, and this time, it’s another remix of Edward Sharpe. Seems like a winning formula so far, right? These guys are fixin’ to be the hottest band of the year it looks like.

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros – Janglin (RAC Mix)

Midnight Club

Anyone else get into Jaill this past month? I did, and they’ll be finishing up a few California gigs soon, before two more dates closer to home. In Chicago they’ll open for Johnny & Jenny and Love As Laughter at Lincoln Hall.

Jaill – We’ve Won

Shouldn’ta Drove

August 26, 2010

Let’s take it West for a minute. Meet King! & my motherf-cking man, Air Stegosaurus. These two grind out forward-thinking bass music daily and help run Smash Monthly parties in Vegas, while combining to form the duo, Bad Dudes. Watch for 119 Records and don’t miss Air Stegosaurus at Burning Man.

Drake – Over (Air Stegosaurus Remix)

Wolfgang Gartner – Latin Fever (KING Remix)

Air Stego Burning Man Slots: Verdant Bleep (4:00 & Esplanade) : Wed., 2AM
and also playing Burners Without Borders ( 3:30 & Esplanade) : Thurs., 1PM

Drumcell @ Smartbar

August 25, 2010

Drumcell, Dustin Zahn, M50 & Decimal will be at Smartbar this Friday. Serious techno, here. Who else goes and reheats Nine Inch Nails tracks like this?

Nine Inch Nails – Me, I’m Not (Drumcell Mix)

Valley

August 25, 2010

Oh man, pretty excited to drop this one, really. Sluggishly and pulsingly charming electronic music by Palmbomen, or “Palm Trees” in Dutch. Here’s “Galore” off of the Moon Children EP. You could swim through that track.

Palmbomen – Galore

Don’t around to posting much hip hop, but some tunes just make you feel super fly driving around on a Summer afternoon. This is definitely one of ‘em, via NahRight. Big K.R.I.T. with “No Wheaties” with Curren$y & Smoke DZA.

Big K.R.I.T. – No Wheaties feat. Curren$y & Smoke DZA

I was waiting to post this one. Les Savy Fav tearing it up on the forthcoming LP, Root For Ruin, and- don’t quote me- I heard from a little bird, there will be a US Tour sometime this year, I hope they come to Chicago.

Les Savy Fav – Sleepless In Silverlake

Waterfalls

August 24, 2010

Been digging The National quite a bit since Lolla, delving into their extensive discography. If you missed them, might want to check out their Milwaukee date, where they’ll be rolling through late September.

The National – Anyone’s Ghost

I also have a track by Camel for ya via Jackmode. Previously I posted a Summer mix and a Meltin Pot EP preview. He’s one of the Dead Fish guys, responsible for some really interesting dance music with a tropical-tech feel.

Camel – Akin

A throwback I thought a lot of ya would be into. It’s Rodriguez, at his best with “Sugar Man”. Not understanding all of the direct references he’s making, but I think I get where he’s going with it. Wonderful tune off of Cold Fact.

Rodriguez – Sugar Man

Homecoming

August 17, 2010

Here is the closest picture I could find that would illustrate my experience in Oregon. I’m heading back tomorrow. Back to reality, unfortunately for me.

Taking a break from TV on the Radio for the time being, Dave Sitek is busy with his solo project Maximum Balloon. Jnerio Jarel‘s remix of the Theophilus London collab hit my inbox today, a teaser for the release.

Maximum Balloon – Groove Me (feat. Theophilus London) (Jneiro Jarel Remix)

Wild Nothing are going on tour, with select dates featuring Stars. So mark your calendars, buy your tickets, and take a listen to this track, “Golden Haze”. Yes, the Chicago date will be supporting Stars, at The Vic Theatre.

Wild Nothing – Golden Haze

Fenech-Soler threw me their latest single, “Lies”, remixed by Herve, amending the ‘solar flare’ title. An air tight floor-friendly version, I’m expecting to hear this one out sometime in the near future for sure.

Fenech-Soler – Lies (Herve’s Solar Flare Remix)

Discovered Funeral Party recently while watching the music video for the single, “Just Because”. LA based with an abundance of energy and variety to their sound, here’s something to tide you over until their full length drops.

Funeral Party – Finale

Deerhunter Tour

August 17, 2010

Deerhunter announced a Fall US Tour supporting Halcyon Digest, which will be released in September. For the Chicago leg, they’ll hit Metro October 22nd. Real Estate will be opening as well! This is shaping up to be amazing..

Oregon

August 16, 2010

For the past week I’ve been on the beaches of Oregon, relaxing and eating some of the best seafood I’ve ever had. It’s a gorgeous state. But, if I was home.. I’d be seeing Interpol & Twin Tigers tonight. Anybody going?

Twin Tigers – Passive Idol

Props where they’re due, Funkism posted this one yesterday- A new James Blake edit composed by Milyoo has surfaced. Dig a little deeper and you’ll find a charming original, titled “Pulley”, worth previewing.

James Blake – Postpone (Milyoo’s “I Think I Edited This” Edit)

I love Soul Clap, despite bogus RA reviews. I said the same about p4k a bit ago: Sometimes these reviewers don’t know shit about shit. Simple, and as effortlessly poetic, as that. Go pick up their new material.

Soul Clap – Dreams Of Tomorrow

Another salute goes out. This time to Fluokids, posting up this Jamie Jones remix of The xx that I’ve been tripping over. Jamie Jones! What else do I need to say here?! The guy’s cucumber cool- The best Techno around.

The xx – Crystalized (Jamie Jones Bootie Mix)
