July 31, 2010

Redthreat Lollapalooza 2010 Festival Guide
[tickets]

Wavves : Friday // 12:15pm // Budweiser Stage

I am stoked to kick off the weekend seeing Wavves. King Of The Beach will probably be my pick for album of the Summer. Their blend of punk-rock/lo-fi will definitely be a highlight and an energetic kickstart to our weekend.

Wavves – Post Acid

The Big Pink : Friday // 3:00pm // Adidas Mega Stage

The London-based duo, The Big Pink, are Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell’s electronic rock efforts. After their single release of “Velvet”, which received heaps of praises, they released A Brief History Of Love this past Fall on 4AD.

The Big Pink – Velvet

The Black Keys : Friday // 6:00pm // Budweiser Stage

The Black Keys are at the forefront of their genre crossing indie rock with southern blues. They’ve putting out incredible releases for the past decade, the most recent being Brothers. I’ll be hitting this up after Dirty Projectors.

The Black Keys – Tighten

Tiga : Friday // 7:30pm // Perry’s Stage

Tiga’s set to take the stage right after Erol Alkan. The guys a cross-genre international playboy DJ. Every release rules. I will say this as well- Perry’s Stage has some fire on Friday. 2ManyDjs will also bring heat, no doubt.

Tiga – Far From Home

Only Children : Saturday // 12:00pm // Perry’s Stage

Only Children, are set to open up my Saturday. There’s nothing quite like Disco House on a Saturday afternoon. If you’re a Chicago local and haven’t been to one of their parties, you’ve really got to get out more.

Hey Champ – Cold Dust Girl (Only Children Remix)

Harlem : Saturday // 1:00pm // Sony Stage

Since moving from Tuscon to Austin, Harlem has earned a big reputation for themselves. Part of me was hoping to catch them in an intimate setting for the first time, but I’ll take what I can get. Their debut, Free Drugs, rules.

Harlem – Gay Human Bones

Grizzly Bear : Saturday // 4:15pm // Budweiser Stage

Brooklyn-based psychedelic folk rock group, Grizzly Bear, is another expected highlight. Veckatimist is the latest of three full length albums, released in 2009. And they’re Radiohead’s guitarist’s favorite band..

Grizzly Bear – Graceland (Paul Simon Cover)

Cut Copy : Saturday // 7:30pm // Playstation Stage

I’m glad that Cut Copy is on the lineup, considering that they are still working on their forthcoming album, due out in January. Their legendary album, In Ghost Colours, was by far the best work of 2008.

Cut Copy – Far Away (Damn Arms Remix)

Dani Deahl : Sunday // 11:15am // Perry’s Stage

Gotta start the day off right. Dani’s Deahl, DJ, blogger, label owner and good friend of mine, will be setting off Perry’s Stage bright and early with electro gems. I always love dancin’ in the sunlight.

Dani Deahl – Ghetto House Radio Mix {zshare}

Health : Sunday // 11:30am // Adidas Stage

American Noise Rock done right, Health has been taking off since their touring in 2008. They’re widely known now for carefully selecting noises and raw synths, haunting vocals, and insane drum techniques.

Health – Die Slow

Yeasayer : Sunday // 4:00pm // Budweiser Stage

I caught Yeasayer’s last gig at Metro and it was pretty awesome. Since their first single, “Sunrise”, the Brooklyn experimental rock group has been soaring. Their second full length, Odd Blood, is still on heavy rotation here.

Yeasayer – O.N.E.

Arcade Fire : Sunday // 8:30pm // Budweiser Stage

The hottest band on the planet right now. If you are unfamiliar with their discography you have some catching up to do. Especially considering their forthcoming release, The Suburbs, is coming out very soon. So excited.

Arcade Fire – Wake Up

Kinks

July 31, 2010

I wish I’d taken acid and gone to a Kinks show.

Ice Cream

July 29, 2010

Nothing quite like Ice Cream on a Summer afternoon, eh? Old but gold- Muscles‘ classic track, “Ice Cream” from the 2007 Ice Cream EP.

Muscles – Ice Cream

Another classic, New Young Pony Club‘s “Ice Cream” had more remixes beyond the ’07 release of, Ice Cream EP. My favorite is the Van She version.

New Young Pony Club – Ice Cream (Van She Tech Remix)

Lollapalooza Pre-Party

July 28, 2010

Kicking off the weekend ‘proper-like’, Jokers Of The Scene are back in town at Metro on Saturday for the Lollapalooza Pre-Party, with Team Bayside High, Moneypenny & Midnight Conspiracy. Never too late to get that early start.

Thunderheist – Jerk It (Jokers Of The Scene Remix)

Jokers of the Scene are cool as fuck- I try to not miss every gig I can. Seen ‘em twice this year already. Also, if you have some video editing skills to foot the bills you might want to enter the Jokers Of The Scene Video Contest being promoted by Fools Gold/Fader. The track is “Revolting Joks”. Do it up!

Jokers Of The Scene – Revolting Joks (Video Edit)

Sonar Festival: Chicago 2010

July 28, 2010

Big news! Finally we have some concrete Sonar Festival info for Chicago. Josh over at TimeOut broke the news first- Martyn, Nosaj Thing, Kid Koala, Ben Frost, Jimmy Edgar and Oval will have night slots. Massive! A daytime Arts exposé will include a documentary on Sonar’s origins, another on the history of synthesized music, audiovisual performances and much more

Sonar Festival: Chicago Cultural Center – September 9-11, 2010

Martyn ft. Spaceape – This Is Insanity (Ben Klock Remix)

Nosaj Thing – Aquarium

Best Coast Tour

July 27, 2010

Maybe my favorite band atm- indie doo-wop punk rockers, Best Coast, announced a few other US dates, including one at Metro. If you did not take my advice to see them at Empty Bottle you missed a great show. Just sayin’..

Best Coast – That’s The Way Boys Are (Lesley Gore Cover)

Another bit of good news- Opening up for them will be Sonny And The Sunsets, who’s album, Too Young To Burn, came out in March this year to some rave reviews. Here’s why!

Sonny And The Sunsets – Too Young To Burn

Big Things

July 26, 2010

Another early announcement- The Big Pink will be playing a gig at Lincoln Hall on 08/05- just one day before their Lollapalooza slot, so if you’re smart you’ll see them twice in a row. Here’s the original, and the Mount Kimbie remix of my favorite track of theirs, “Velvet”. Pick up A Brief History Of Love.

The Big Pink – Velvet

Also- Mount Kimbie is going to be touring the US as well, supporting their beautiful debut, Crooks & Lovers- no Chicago date, unfortunately. Sad face…

The Big Pink – Velvet (Mount Kimbie Remix)

Wavves also announced a lengthy US Fall Tour for those of you who are as pumped about their new shit as I am. King of the Beach is awesome. All the right elements of the punk rock I grew up with, just switch out a skateboard for a surfboard and you’re good to go. I got my Empty Bottle ticket.

Wavves – King Of The Beach

Just got a couple new tracks from Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.. It’s been a hot minute since I heard him last, but it seems that he’s been busy putting together the singles “Morning Light” & “Collapsing Cities”, the latter having a remix done by Jakwob that I’m happy to share. Is that a bassoon?

Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. – Morning Light

Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. – Collapsing Cities (Jakwob Remix)

Animism

July 26, 2010

Tropical heat from Bambounou today. The Animism EP dropped with force including remixes by French Fries, Dre Skull, Art Noveau and a collab b/w Teki Latex & LOL Boys. Loving LOL Boys lately. Here’s an unrelated freebie.

Bambounou – Dogon

Oh My!

July 25, 2010

Oh my! I was able to listen to a few off of Arcade Fire‘s The Suburbs this past weekend and it is amazing. Raising the bar, even for themselves. I could not be more excited to see their headlining slot at Lollapalooza this year. Too bad that means they won’t have nearby shows to travel to. Screw Lolla contracts.

Arcade Fire – The Suburbs

New track by The Knocks for your listening pleasure. Neon Gold lighting it up once again with the single release. I envy those of you who caught the Midnight Juggs/Knocks celebration this weekend. Brooklyn is cool, too.

The Knocks – Make It Better

Another release that many have been looking forward to, Les Savy Fav‘s Root For Ruin will deliver much more than their fans bargained for. A UK tour has been announced, I’m hoping they hop over the Atlantic for a little while this summer. Their shows are supposed to be something legendary…

Les Savy Fav – Patty Lee

Dreaming

July 24, 2010

More goodness from Mystery Jets to post up today. Can it get much better?

Mystery Jets – Dreaming Of Another World (Lindstrom & Prins Thomas Remix)

Siamese Dream

July 24, 2010

ATTN METRO: Please allow me a ticket to see Smashing Pumpkins. Siamese Dream has been my favorite album for as long as I can remember. That is all.

Midnight Juggernauts

July 24, 2010

Midnight Juggernauts are back bending space & time once again from their unique psych-rock standpoints. “Michael’s Deadline” is the b-side to the vinyl release of Crystal Axis, and for a little extra we have us a Turkish Prison mix. There’s also 3 gigs left in the US Tour if you’re livin’ on the coasts.

Midnight Juggernauts – Michael’s Deadline

Midnight Juggernauts – Lifeblood (Turkish Prison Mix)

Sam Cooke

July 23, 2010

Sam Cooke live on Late Night with Johnny Carson

Ridin’

July 22, 2010

Another track from Tennis has emerged. We’ve already heard “Marathon”, now we have us one more track, “Baltimore”, off of the soon-to-be released 7″ out on Underwater Peoples. Very pretty stuff we have here.

Tennis – Baltimore

I’ve got a solid Salem remix for you too. It’s of “Holograms” by These New Puritans, who are favored by the Klaxons for the Mercury Prize for their album, Hidden. Maybe now they’ll get a nomination.

These New Puritans – Hologram (Salem Remix)

Sticking to remixes here’s the Daniel Haaksman remix of “I`ll get you” by Classixx. Who went to the Classixx gig this past weekend at Smartbar? I’m sure it was blowin’ up. Here’s one to work a 2step to.

Classixx – I’ll Get You (Daniel Haaksman Remix)

Winding it back down, here’s a great little jam by Your Twenties that was featured on the 2009′s Caught Wheel of and was given as a freebie by Pure Groove a while back. Really have been feeling this one latley.

Your Twenties – Folks Back Home

Echoes {Video}

July 21, 2010

Here’s The official music video for the Klaxons‘ track, “Echoes”. Good timing, too. I just bought my Klaxons tix for Chicago’s US Tour date (9/30).

Revival

July 21, 2010

Deerhunter pressed this single today. If you go to Halcyon Digest, and type “Tapereel” into the password field, voila! The Side-A of Deerhunter’s new single, titled “Revival”! Pretty sweet if you like Deerhunter, which I do.

Deerhunter – Revival

Cruisin’

July 21, 2010

Delorean is releasing their Real Love single on True Panther this week. This is the 2nd single from Subiza, with remixes by Tiedye and The Field. I was fortunate to catch Delorean’s amazing set this past weekend at Pitchfork.

Delorean – Real Love

If you’re in Chicago and haven’t been to a Downtown Sound yet on Monday nights- Shame! This week was Kid Sister. Previously they’ve had She & Him and my favorite so far this year, The Books. A really amazing show- thankfully they’ll be back on an extensive US Tour this Fall. See them.

The Books – Chain Of Missing Links

Got one from Ra Ra Riot‘s forthcoming album, The Orchard, which will be relesed late August on Barsuk. Chris Walla from Death Cab was recruited for production help, along with Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij.

Ra Ra Riot – Boy

Girls @ Pitchfork

July 18, 2010

Gonna see Girls today! Before they jet to Tokyo. Fun Fact: Christopher Owens, the lead singer, was born into the Children Of God cult. Funny thing, because right now I’m watching the Six Feet Under that has the COG burial. Haven’t given their release, Album, a once-over? You’re overdue.

Girls – Lust For Life

Girls – Laura Read the rest of this entry »

Panda Bear @ Pitchfork

July 17, 2010

Noah Lennox will be playing tonight at Pitchfork, opening for Freddie Gibbs & LCD Soundsystem. A prolific talent- If you’re not familiar with his work as Panda Bear, you should at least recognize work with Animal Collective. His latest single, which includes “Tomboy” & “Slow Motion”, leaked a week ago.

Panda Bear – Comfy In Nautica

Panda Bear – Slow Motion

Turn Out The Light

July 15, 2010

Pitchfork 2010 Festival Guide

July 13, 2010

Here it is! My Pitchfork 2010 Festival schedule/guide. Expectations are high this year being the lineup is so promising. I left out some obvious highlights, and will probably do an afterparty post tomorrow. This should be a lot of fun.

Liars : friday / 5:30 / connect stage

Liars are a 3-piece band that have been intriguing critics since the turn of the century. Their latest album, Sisterworld, explores alternate spaces people create in order to maintain identity/environments where outcasts and loners celebrate a skewered relationship to society. Crazy!

Liars – The Other Side Of Mt. Heart Attack

Robyn : friday / 6:25 / aluminum stage

Is Robyn Sweden’s answer to Madonna, but born 25 years later? No, but she did open for her Euro-tour a few years back and has won a lot of awards. Her work this year has been on the Body Talk Series, that will include Royksopp & Snoop collabs -among others- and a tour with Kelis.

Robyn – Cobrastyle

Delorean : saturday / 2:30 / aluminum stage

I’ve been waiting to see these guys all year. Hot on the heels of their 2010 release of Subiza on True Panther- their third album since ’04- Delorean has been steamrolling the indie/dance scene this year. Snag some tickets to their Empty Bottle set on Friday if you like them like me. Do it.

Delorean – Simple Graces

Real Estate : saturday /1:45 / connect stage

Highly recommended by Pitchfork themselves, receiving a Best New Music title and receiving an 8.5 rating for their first release, Real Estate. Garden State should prove to be worth an early arrival Saturday afternoon. You probably need the suntan anyway.

Real Estate – Beach Combers

Smith Westerns : saturday / 4:45 / balance stage

We’ve seen some big things happen to this Chicago group this year. Releasing a highly praised album, signing to Fat Possum, touring with The Big Pink & MGMT next in Europe? How you could blow up faster without having the whole world rightfully hate you. Oh yeah- By making great music.

Smith Westerns – Be My Girl

Bear In Heaven : saturday / 6:45 / balance stage

Brooklyn-based Bear in Heaven have scored huge with their latest album, Beast Rest Forth Mouth, and are another band that received the Best New Music award from Pitchfork. I don’t know what’s more amazing: the album, or the insane ways that p4k told us to enjoy it- but it is indeed awesome.

Bear In Heaven – Lovesick Teenager

Here We Go Magic : sunday / 1:45 / connector stage

Another Brooklyn-based group, Here We Go Magic started as the brainchild of Luke Temple with a 4track and some fuzzy, psychedelic lofi recordings, and has since expanded into a band that just released the full-length, Pigeons. that has been getting massive play lately.

Here We Go Magic – Casual

Surfer Blood : sunday /4:45 / balance stage

Another band I’d likely toss ‘best summer album at’ if it wasn’t released in January! Guess they got a good start. Surfer Blood is a band out of Florida, who’s debut full length, Astro Coast, could easily be described by it’s influences spanning from Pavement to the Beach Boys. Very lively.

Surfer Blood – Swim

Neon Indian : sunday / 6:45 / balance stage

The third incarnation of Alan Palomo’s (succeeding the Ghosthustler and Vega projects of his) with the addition of Alicia Cardetto, Neon Indian released Psychic Chasms last year after a series of remixes that gained plenty of online praise. This should satisfy my synth-pop & electronic cravings I’ll have.

Neon Indian – Deadbeat Summer

The Radio Dept

July 13, 2010

Many ‘best-of’ & ‘halfway’ lists are slating these guys, and I’m not surprised. The Radio Dept.‘s Clinging To A Scheme is worth an afternoon deliberating over placement. This Swedish group isn’t new to the game, and this record is much more collected, atmospheric and mature in focus than previous work.

The Radio Dept. – David

The Radio Dept. – Heaven’s On Fire

Michigan

July 12, 2010

A tale of sorrow, really. She came from Alabama with a rose in her head. It’s all history after that. Interesting tune from Modern Skirts, who just released the Happy 81 EP on Athens Music about a week ago.

Modern Skirts – Rebecca St. Claire

This gem emerged the other day. Seems like  Kyte is releasing a forthcoming album July 26th, and to help spread the word they’re tossing out this Pacific! remix that I have been turning over a lot in my library.

Kyte – Designed For Damage (Pacific! Remix)

North of our border, Wisconsin’s Jaill have been heating up. Though they won’t be playing Lincoln Hall in Chicago ’til August, they’ll be doing a whole bunch of west coast appearances until then. Might wanna mark your calendar.

Jaill – Stroller

If there’s anything more lighthearted than Dent May‘s “That Feeling” – I’d like to hear it. All the right Beach Boys influence in all the right places. Right now I’m sitting on the shore of Michigan overlooking the lake and I’m feelin’ it.

Dent May – That Feeling
