Birthdaze

November 29, 2009

via A Journey Round My Skull

It’s my birthday! Yay! Too bad I have to move the whole day…

This Munk and Asia Argento track has been stuck in my head for a little bit. Taken from the No Milk EP, it released on Gomma about two weeks ago. Mercury makes a nice run of it. Kinda has the Soulwax “NY Excuse” cowbell going on in it, with a nice driving disco backbone, all-in-all I’m really enjoying it.

Munk – No Milk (Mercury Remix)

Friendly Fires and The Xx are going to be in Chicago this week so I thought I’d do a lil mention. Playing at Bottom Lounge on Thursday, I usually am not very excited for ‘indie shows’ but I think I’ll attend this one. Jared from MSP said The Xx were pretty great when they rolled through Spain a few weeks ago, so…

Friendly Fires – Paris (Aeroplane Remix)

Florence & The Machine -YGTL (The Xx Remix) (Rennaisance Man Edit)

Neon Indian have been busy lately. Busy remixing Grizzly Bear‘s track, “Cheerleader,” and making waves across the internet doing so. Here is one of their versions, titled the ‘Studio 6669′ Remix that has caught my ear as of recent. It’s one of two that they composed for this project.

Grizzly Bear – Cheerleader (Neon Indian’s ‘Studio 6669 Remix’)

Closing this one out, Matias Aguayo has been coming into focus more and more frequently. After the success of his latest full length Ay Ay Ay on Kompact, we now have us a single for the featured track “Rollerskate” with equally excellent remixes coupled with. Below is the Sanfuentes and Alex Thunder one. Aguayo is putting a fresh face on minimal, becoming one of the most proflific and promising artists worth watching.

Amato & Specs @ Debonair [12/05]

November 29, 2009

Chicago’s not the same without James Amato running things around here. Having recently moved his largely successful fidget label, PottyMouth Records, to LA, it was a sad day when I first read the label bio-line starting with “LA based with Chicago roots.” Thankfully he’s not forgotten about us entirely…

Returning this week to Debonair Social Club to throw a party with the infamous Derek Specs of Debonair & Site & Sound fame on Saturday, December 5th, we’ll get to relive good ole times for one solid night of dirty, bass-driven, fidgety goodness. Amato recently released a mixtape showcasing a whole bunch solid label releases that I’m sure we’ll hear a couple of. Consider this one somewhat of a preview.

Thankful

November 28, 2009

via Stéphane Massa-Bidal

Sorry for the delay in posting. Was busy stuffing my face with Turkey along with the rest of the heathen US populace. Much to be thankful for. Posting shall resume as usual starting… now!

Local dance rock allstars, Hey Champ threw together a remix of Priors‘ track “What You Need” that offers itself as a low-key, bouncy little disco splendor, full of keys, synth and ‘woahhh!’- I have to say I am a much bigger fan of this effort than the ‘Cooler Than Me’ remix they put together right before this one. Hey Champ better stay in Chicago, damnit.

Priors – What You Need (Hey Champ Remix)

Annie released her album Don’t Stop this past week, and if you were fortunate enough to be in New York, you could have caught the Norweigan dance-pop diva doing a DJ set on Friday night. For fans, this album has been a long time coming, but the payoff is great. Peep this Phones remix from back when.

Annie – Heartbeat (Phones Remix)

This one was sent to me a bit ago, but for some reason I slept on it until now. Remixed by Totally Enormous Extinct Animals, it was kind of hard to take the track seriously considering the nomiker, this Oddyssey track really does the trick for me. I think I listened to it 5x in a row on the plane ride home this afternoon. Kind of surprised to see nobody has blogged this one yet.

From Mars

The new Jori Hulkkonen album Men Are From Mars was released on Turbo a few weeks ago and it proves everything I’ve assumed of the man. He’s been in the game since ’88 and isn’t about to stop making incredible electronic music any time soon. The eighth track off the release, “Undercover,” featuring The Dove (aka Tiga) really does the trick for me.

Jori Hulkkonen – Undercover feat. The Dove (Tiga)

For an older, classic sample of his work that has aged quite well, listen to his remix of Chromeo‘s “Bonafied Lovin’.” Gets me every time.

Chromeo – Bonafied Lovin (Jori Hulkkonen Remix)

“When you think of Finland, you think of Lordi, Nokia, Zyntherius, pale men with wiskers, Matti Nykänen coke-orgies and a stupid language…..but underneath that depressing grey façade lies a rich musical culture….a culture personified by the living legend of electronic composition Jori Hulkkonen.” – Tiga

Chicago’s own Prairie Cartel released a new album a few weeks ago, Where Did All My People Go. Last featured back when the Hey Champ remix of “Cracktown” a while back, the ‘Cartel carry a grungy, digitized dance-rock vibe well. Here’s a Bright Lights remix of “No Light.”

The Prairie Cartel – No Light (Bright Lights Remix)

I can’t stop playing this Extrawelt jam. Sure it’s been out for a while, released as a single on Border Community in ’05. But when that 2:30 marker it gets live. I wish more techno sounded the way that Border Community envisions it.

Extrawelt – Soopertrack

People seem to be getting pretty worked up over Beach House these days. Well, “Norway” does hit the spot.. Beach House’s album, Teen Dream , is set to be released on January 26th. I can see festival bookings in this band’s future. But what do I know?

Audion @ Smartbar [11.20]

November 18, 2009

The crown jewel of Ghostly International, Audion (aka Matthew Dear) is coming to Smartbar on Friday as part of his Hecatomb Tour ’09. Forget everything you thought you knew about live techno. The Hecatomb (def.) project was created by Dear, art director Will Calcutt and renowned artist Eno Henze. This will be an amazing performance, shown in a select five US cities through the 5th of December.

Handful

November 18, 2009

via niagaradetroit : i want to post more artwork.

After a little patience, here’s the Jakwob remix of Ellie Goulding‘s “Under The Sheets” that I previously discussed. Can it get any better? Christ this guy’s having a great year.

Ellie Goulding – Under The Sheets (Jakwob Remix)

A ‘vintage’ feel is an accurate descriptor for this one- In flagranti did a little number on Crystal Fighters track “I Love London” recently. The full EP will be out Nov 30th.

Crystal Fighters – I Love London (In flagranti Remix)

Another irresistible gem that I’ve been playing, alongside it’s risqué video counterpart, is the Alex Gopher remix of Flairs‘ “Truckers Delight.” Big ups to TMS for this one.

This Is A Woodstock!

November 17, 2009

Meet Chaco & Choca, an Italian duo that sometimes refer to themselves as Caffe Chocolate. The Italian duo was kind enough to send me their latest track, “This is a Woodstock,” a smooth tech-house gem that is to be released on Baseone Records. It’s a paced and urgent hypnotism that really carries a listener.

Points d’Amour

November 16, 2009

Ultra suave French dj/producer, Sebastian Tellier, is releasing his first single from the acclaimed album Sexuality with remixes from two of the hottest young producers out there, Penguin Prison & Floating Points. I’m happy to say that I have a little sample of the EP for you in this Floating Points 320 snippet. Should do you right before you go pre-order the 12″ at Rough Trade.

Sebastian Tellier - L’amour Et La Violence (Floating Points Mix)

Here’s another ridiculous Floating Points track that I’ve been in love with since discovery this past April, titled “Love Me Like This.” Producing a post-dubstep sound with a favorable ear towards jazz and soul elements you’d more readily find in deep house, just about everything he’s done this year is worth a spot in your library. His most recent work is a Sam Sparro/Basement Jaxx remix of “Feelings Gone.”

Floating Points – Love Me Like This (Nonsense Dub)

Overtaken

November 16, 2009

Edwin Van Cleef dropped his Overtaken EP today, marking the premier release for Space Disco. The EP also boasts remixes by Mille, Neo Tokyo and FM Attack and is available on beatport today!

It’s Monday

November 15, 2009

It’s another Monday. Specifically, it’s a Mike Monday remix of “Zum Zum” by the Spanish duo Thugfucker. Featured on the Zum Zum EP with further remixing by Audiojack and Peter Kruder, the release is a solid gold facelift on the ’06 original. My first introduction to Thugfucker’s work, they’ve since gone on and released other material, including the Seratonin Remixes with a Kiki feature that I’m a big fan of.

Mike Monday – Zum Zum (Thugfucker Remix)

This next one is the Mike Monday remix of Animal Collective‘s “My Girls.” Somewhat late to the punch, sure, but well worth a click. A good idea would be to pick up the very recent Will Saul & Mike Monday’remix included in the Zingalo Remixes EP by Tinny, with other works by South Rakkas Crew, Doorly & Pempi. Great company to keep.

Animal Collective – My Girls (Mike Monday Remix)

Side Note: If you’re in Chicago, don’t forget to enter the deadmau5 ticket giveaway contest while you’re at it. The winner will be decided Tuesday.

Here Comes Titts

November 13, 2009

City of Water

November 13, 2009

Tom Croose gave me the green-light to post up his ‘City of Water’ edit of “Venice” by Beirut. As a little added bonus he also tossed in the album artwork, for use if he decides to press it to vinyl. It really makes me want to visit Venice, now that I think of it.

Beirut – Venice (Tom Croose City of Water Edit)

Croose is 1/2 of the Ghostly/Moongadget duo from New York, Worst Friends, and focuses on lesser lucid forms of nu-disco and electronica. Along with the Beirut track, I’ve included a short mix that ‘Croose put together for an Australian radio station a couple months back to help you get a feel where he’s coming from.

Deadmau5 Ticket Giveaway!

November 13, 2009

Deadmau5 is coming to Congress Theater next Friday, November 20th, for the Chicago leg of the Lack Of A Better Name Tour. Who remember the last show of his at Congress? I do. Alongside him will be one of the most celebrated indie/electro acts of the past few years, Ghostland Observatory. I have foolishly missed each chance to see them, so I’m pretty eager. Also, BURNS, Kid Color, Midnight Conspiracy, and Team Bayside High will be on the scene! This should be an awesome night, it would be a shame if you didn’t have tickets when it inevitably sells out.

ticket giveaway: [redthreat] is giving away a pair of tickets to one lucky winner, courtesy of cold grums! to enter, just shoot me an email (closed) with your full name in it and you’re all set. the winner will be notified via email.

Here’s a little motivation. Thousands of blog years ago, the ‘mau5 put up a free album composed of many short songs on his myspace page. Though very brief, the songs are very eclectic. Here are a few of the more ambient works I really enjoyed.

Deadmau5 – Wish You Were There

Deadmau5 – Hardly Noticable

Deadmau5 – Bored of Canada

Deadmau5 – Don’t Give Me Tapes

Deadmau5 – Reach Out

Deadmau5 – American Slushie

Deadmau5 – Bored

Deadmau5 – Just Before 8Bit

Deadmau5 – Maybe Sometimes

Don’t Judge

November 13, 2009

Out now on 2nd Drop Records, LV‘s latest EP, Don’t Judge, features a remix by Fantastic Mr Fox that’s outstanding. That, and Mat Pringle‘s album artwork is gorgeous.

I’ll leave it up to you to go purchase the track, but here’s a link to a youtube video that features the song if you wan’t a clean listen.

Kid Sister – Right Hand Hi (Kingdom Remix)

We have that in common.”  (via Chicagoist)

Wooh!

November 12, 2009

I had heard of Boemklatsch, just not of their label yet. Now that’s changed. Today I was emailed a couple of tracks from Bmkltsch Records of the Dutch partystarter, Mike Mago.

Hardline electro here, I’ve got two singles from Mago rightfully titled “Hey!” and “Wooh!” both with synth-lines like buzz saws, a little bit of wobble-bass and title-inspiring vox as a cherry on top. This is an extensive glimpse of the full EP, and a mixtape (whaatt?!) with remixes by Dah Oh, Malente and Gomes & Dion, which will be out next month so keep an eye out, eh?

Shake & Pop

November 12, 2009

It’s been a while since I’ve had a Cold Blank track up here, and my man Mr Gaspar hit me up today with this little Green Velvet remix, adding a little jack & electro fizz to the classic. If you like this I’d tell you to go snag their 2012 EP that was released a few weeks ago on beatport.

November 11, 2009

Brandon Sek, Curb Crawler and fellow Grinder, recorded this mix today that he shared with me. In his own words, it “sounds like // warehouse + space + thriller + electric + science + chicago + sleazy + vocoder + hand clap + detroit + strings + mood + siren + roland + delay + acid.” Yeah!

You Have Gold Panda

November 11, 2009

Here’s the new Gold Panda remix of The Field‘s “I Have The Moon, You Have The Internet,” from his forthcoming EP, Yesterday & Today Remixe, which will be released on Kompact early December. This last release will finish up what will have been a tremendous year for his releases and touring- Nobody makes techno like The Field. Thanks, Grindin’!

The Field – I Have The Moon, You Have The Internet (Gold Panda Remix)

I’m glad that Kompact eyed Gold Panda for this release, I’m eager to see his production gain as much traction as possible as soon as possible. Want full album! For good measure I’m also going to include this massive Telepathe remix I’ve been fond of for a little bit now.

Telepathe – Chrome’s On It (Gold Panda Remix)

dub 101

November 11, 2009

Chicago dubstar aKademy hit me up the other day, letting me know about Rumble Lounge, the monthly dub/techno expose at Rodan where he’ll be spinning with Olin. The night’s mission is to explore the ‘minimal, subtle and moody sides of dubstep and techno and the increasing overlap between the two.’ Should be interesting.

Thankfully I have two mixtapes of aKademy’s to showcase today. One serves as an indication as to what he’ll be spinning tonight, titled “Microseism,” (which I am lacking the tracklist to atm..) and the other one was his debut, “Tepid Sounds…” which is more banger-oriented. Enjoy!

‘Sheets Released

November 10, 2009

If you’re unfamiliar with who Neon Gold are by now then you should consider this one of many wake-up calls. Several releases after their entrance into the recording industry with Passion Pit’s debut, we have us Ellie Goulding‘s new EP Under The Sheets, with some proper remixes by Pariah, Baby Monster and Jakwob (yay!) An all around beautiful track that follows up her debut single, “Starry Eyed,” (best song of the year? idk)- here’s what I have to share with you so far.

Ellie Goulding – Under The Sheets (Baby Monster Remix)

Ellie Goulding – Under The Sheets (Pariah Remix)

To top this one off, here’s a remix by Pariah and an original by Baby Monster that I thought I’d include in here as well.. One’s a remix of the skyrocketting group, The xx, the other an Arveene & Misk remix that I’m very fond of in particular.

Baby Monster – Ultra Violence and Beethoven (Arveene & Misk Remix)

The XX – Basic Space (Pariah Remix)

via bine_bardi

I’ve been sent this Bloody Beetroots remix of the Groove Armada track “I Won’t Kneel” for you guys to listen to. It’s certainly more ambient than most Beetroot tracks that I’ve heard before, but features the same glitchy token production elements that I’ve become so comfortable with in their previous works.

Groove Armada – I Won’t Kneel (Bloody Beetroots Remix)

I’m guessing this track didn’t make the cut for the I Wont Kneel EP, that features official remixes by Joe & Will Ask? and Mouj & No Brainer. I can’t see why though. Oh, and as always.. I love the Blood Beetroots.

Spellbound

November 9, 2009

Another throwback techno jam that has been on repeat is this Marcus Worgull song. A beautifully deep and clubby track, the original is accompanied by the vocals of Mr. White. But somehow, it’s the instrumental version that speaks more loudly to me. So good.

Marcus Worgull – Spellbound (Dub)

Solid Shame

November 9, 2009

Two short months after Amanda Blank (of Spank Rock) released her own full-length, I Love You, she’s coming out with a remix EP of the track “Shame On Me.” I love this girl- and not just because Yuksek tears apart her tracks to my liking on a regular basis now. No, it’s because of her gig two halloweens ago in Chicago. She killed it. Easily one of the best female stage presence I’ve seen, she must have been crowd-surfing half the show. I don’t think I’ve witnessed Subterranean rock like that since.

Amanda Blank – Shame On Me (Yuksek Remix)

Amanda Blank will be performing in support of Peaches on November 20th at Metro. Click here to grab some tickets, here to see if she’ll be swinging through your city.
