Back Down

September 27, 2009

Munk came out with a single a few days ago on Gomma Records titled You Never See Me Back Down, adding to what has been a handful of originals and remixes that he’s completed so far in ’09.

This release features two remixes by the little-known Australian group Cut Copy, one remix being the ‘Jackmaster’ edit that’s posted below. The other two included are a horror-disco remix by the Roman duo, L.U.C.A., and a Chicago House rendition done by Migumatix.

The DJ

September 23, 2009

Looks like DJ Hell and P Diddy are back again, working together on a single titled The DJ where they are set to redefine what constitutes dancefloor techno. With remixes by the likes of Radio Slave, Spencer Parker, Jay Haze, SIS and Paul Woolford, I’d say they’re well on their way with those alone, but it only starts there.

It isn’t necessarily a particular sound they’re aiming for- most of the release’s concentration is rooted in track length. Radio Slave’s version weighs in at 28 minutes of what will add up to over an hour once it’s all through. ‘Why?’ you might ask? This statement calls back to an era where the extended version of a song was more coveted than a trimmed down radio-edit. Fuck a “Crowd-Pleaser.”

Caspa @ Smartbar [9.24]

More dubstep in store for y’all this Wednesday. After his last showing, I’d feel like I was withholding something from you if I didn’t announce it- Caspa will be playing tomorrow at Smartbar. If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s when Smartbar brings in an English dubstep talent you have to be a damned fool to miss it. Opening up the night we’ll have Timid, Whoa-B & J-Courage.

Coming back for the second time this year, you can blame the quick return on the upcoming premiere release, Everybody’s Talking, Nobody’s Listening, which will drop on November 24. Will not disappoint. But while we wait for that, let’s take a look at this Dub Police single from ’07, titled Way Of The Dub, which features two tracks, one of which being a solid Caspa remix of “Bushido” by The Others. And for a little extra, let’s have a quick listen to his remix of Deadmau5‘ classic “I Remember,” featured on the I Remember single released on mau5trap. Interesting fusion of styles there.

Grimey Intentions

September 22, 2009

One of my favorite dubstep talents recently stepped in and remixed a track off of Simian Mobile Disco‘s work, Temporary Pleasures. Another heavy vocal piece, courtesy of Beth Ditto from the Gossip, Joker adds his unique blend of analog grime to the mixture and further cements himself as one of the more cutting edge producers his genre has to offer us these days.

Oh Lilliannn…

Now that summer seems to be completely at it’s close, I want to look back on the incredible Friday night headliner of Lollapalooza. Here is my favorite Depeche Mode remix, done by one my favorite producers, Robag Wruhme, of the Wighonmy Brothers. You can find it on the Wighnomy Brothers release, Remikks Potpourri, which also features remixes Robag worked of artists like Ellen Allien, Future Sounds of London and Underworld.

Producing and spinning techno with a minimal/experimental slant, some of the Wighnomy Brothers recent works have been for Gui Boratto’s No Turning Back single, among other remix works for artists that I like, such as James Teej and Apparat. I’ve said it before, but seeing the Wighnomy Brothers performance this year at DEMF radically changed my tastes in music.

Trust in Tim Green

Tiefschwarz & Seth Troxler‘s latest, the Trust EP came out recently featuring this great Tim Green remix. You should go pick it up.

Pilooski @ Berlin [9.23]

Pilooski will be making his first Chicago appearance on Wednesday, September 23rd at Berlin, so let’s give him a good showing! Couldn’t be better timing either, really, having just been featured on the LCD Soundsytem/Nike remix project for the single of 45:33 Remixes out this past Tuesday on DFA. So go pick that up.

For a little curveball, I’m not going to post that track. You can find that one here at any number of different sites. What I want you to check out is this remix Pilooski did of Von Sudenfed‘s ’07 track, “The Rhinohead,” that you probably overlooked- most-likely unwillingly- yet very, very foolishly. Shame on you.

Skream @ Smartbar [9.18]

September 17, 2009

This Friday, a pioneer of Dubstep will be arriving in Chicago and setting up shop at Smartbar in what has to be one of the most anticipated nights local bassheads have had to look forward to in a while. Croydon’s Skream is comin’!

If any of you can still remember how live Benga’s last show was, there’s probably nothing more I need to say about how awesome this should be. For those who aren’t aware, check out Skream’s latest EP, Burning Up/Memories of 3rd Base, out now on Digital Soundboy, and be sure to have a listen to the standards posted below.

Jamie Jones

September 17, 2009

Big ups to Curb Crawlers for the heads up on what Jamie Jones has been doing lately. This track, “Turning Tables” has been on repeat over here for the past 24. Usually finding himself in a more tech-house genre, Jones has had several releases recently including his first feature full-length, titled Don’t You Remember the Future, and a feature on Tiefschwarz & Seth Troxler’s latest EP, Trust. Funky and hypnotic works there, below is a little motivation ’cause here’s some work worth ponying up for.

Update: Jamie Jones will actually be spinning at Spybar on Sunday, September 27th.

AC Slater @ Debonair [9.16]

Tonight’s Fly By Night at Debonair will be headlined by NY’s heavyhanded Trouble & Bass club favorite, AC Slater. Opening the night up for us we have us Willy Joy, Will Eastman, Capcom and Brookah.

To get in spirit, I have us the latest Slater remix completed for Juiceboxxx‘s new single on iheartcomix. One part rave, two parts dub in this here cocktail. And for good measure, let’s toss the Bok Bok edit of Jack Beats remix of Slater’s own “Jack Got Jacked” to make it a little more interesting.

The Life Wire

September 13, 2009

If you haven’t had the opportunity to listen to Gregor Tresher‘s latest EP releases, The Life Wire Part 1, released in mid-August, or The Life Wire Part 2, released a week ago Monday, it’s time to do your homework. Seriously. And take another closer look at the album artwork I posted above. Notice anything? Kinda eerie, eh?

The last time we heard Tresher putting forth music this great was two years ago with A Thousand Nights, his first feature full-length. Dark and melodic, tunes like these grow to characterize periods of time for me very easily. Below is a track that came out sometime last year, where Tresher remixed who would have to be my favorite Irish DJ, Fergie for the release, Great Carnival Stuff. Also very nice.

Outhouse

You might remember the Nathan Fake track I posted earlier this year after he released his latest LP, Hard Islands, on James Holden’s label, Border Community. It was the Holden remix of “The Sky Was Pink,” which is probably a more notorious track than the one below but whatever. There aren’t too many producers I admire quite like I do those two. Take a listen to this “Outhouse” remix that Valentino Kanzyani tried his hand on in ’07, a few years after the original had been dropped. Timeless piece..

Ketchup & Beans

Marc Houle has been pretty busy this past month or so. A Minus heavyweight, he’s dropped the Licking Skin EP which was a Beatport feature for a few weeks that carries one of my favorite tracks of the year bearing the single’s title, and more recently was featured on a Battant single doing a remix of “The Butcher.” On the same release you can also hear a Micky Moonlight remix that’s pretty nice as well.

Below is an original track made late last year titled “Ketchup and Beans” that I was particularly fond of.

Dark Flower

Loving Joris Voorn lately. Just today he came out with a 2 track release, Dusty House Room 2, with two tracks on it titled “Chase the Mouse” and “We’re All Clean,” both of which characteristically exhibit his innovative blend of Detroit Techno and sexy Deep House charm.

But that’s not what I’m posting for you today. Here’s a classic of Voorn’s that always does the trick for me; Voorn’s remix of Robert Babicz‘ pretty little number titled “Dark Flower” that was put together in April of ’08.
