What A Week

Simian Mobile Disco (photo by Milon)

We have quite a few days in store for us here in Chicago, coming in the wake of one of the more intense weekends I’ve had. But there is no time to rest. Tonight, Simian Mobile Disco will be playing at Sonotheque along with Dark Wave Disco (03.17.08). The last show I saw of theirs was really evocative: pillars of light surrounding a circular table, stocked full of equipment that they rotated around. Here’s a video of their performance at Studio B that illustrates the spectacle pretty well.

Vito and Druzzi from The Rapture are also going to be playing a DJ set over at Evil Olive for Rehab Monday with Jordan Z & Florida Mike (link?) (03.17.0 8) . Rehab always gets a consistently crazy group of kids in there, plus with awesome drink specials I never have to kill my wallet. I just with that they’d get the DJ booth onto the first floor somehow, that’s my only reservation about it. Check out the Alex Metric remix.

Tomorrow, March 18th, my favorite electronic outfit of 2007 (for real) is gracing Subterannean. The German duo Digitalism will be playing alongside Guns’N'Bombs, and I am doing whatever I can to get myself prepared for all of it.. I missed their last performance in the Chi because I was back in Arizona, so I’m really glad that they returned- especially alongside some of my favorite LA bangers, GNB. Welcome back Johnny. Tomorrow should be off the chain! On a side note, I could probably listen to Pogo for the rest of my life and not get tired of that track. Golden. Check this video for a little preview.

And as if that was all! Riot In Belgium will be hitting up Funky Buddha Lounge for another Outdanced! event with Dark Wave Disco on Tuesday (03.17.0 8) . The last gig I saw them play out here was at Sonotheque and they killed it. Last year, “La Musique” was definitely one of the hottest tracks that hit the airwaves. That song still kills crowds every time I see it played. The JBAG edit is a nice finish. And Alex Gopher with Riot In Belgium and Knightlife (via indie dancefloor)?? What a combo.

what do you think the dj set for SMD is going to be like? i’ve been to sonotheque before, and its not really set up in a great way to profile an artist. they’re cooped up in a plastic to the side of the main “floor” and bar. i’d still love to see them, but i wonder how easy its going to be to watch them. i love watching more than dancing (unless i’m already wasted).

they’ll have them set up in the back like they did with the teenagers. it’ll be in the far left corner, walking in from the entrance, across from the hallway connecting to the bathrooms. that what i figure..

welp… that was something. they kept all of us that didn’t preorder tickets waiting out in the cold until around 11-1130 (i guess that’s my bad for not preordering for SMD, i just ordered my tix now for digitalism tomorrow night).

the show absolutely rocked. the acoustics at sonotheque are incredible. it’s such a small and intimate venue, everyone ends up bumping with everyone all night. great time!

dasmetzger- i’m not surprised. i couldn’t make it after all. bummer, but something came up at the last minute. luckily i saw their empty bottle show last time, so i know what you’re talking about. those guys are really talented, that’s for sure. how did the crowd respond? what was a hightlight?

I had a lot of fun. It was a DJ set so they were in the plastic box - no flashing and/or rotating. DWD came correct (as usual) and SMD killed it. The crowd brought a lot of energy, there was a good turnout and everyone was dancing. Personal highlights (besides “Hustler” of course)were when they played Duke Dumont, Dusty Kid and (especially) ZZT.
