Villains @ Sonotheque (02/27)

The Villains, one of the hottest electro sets out of LA, are hitting Sonotheque this Wednesday (02/27/08)- brought to you by Dark Wave Disco, Empty Bottle & Red Threat (that’s right.)

You might remember the Villains from their scorching remixes of Bloc Party and Daft Punk that lit up DJ sets across the country, and from my Best-Of list that I assembled at the end of 2007. They graced it twice. I strongly urge you to go see this show if you’re in the Chicago area, I’m happy that the gig landed at Sonotheque, it’s probably my favorite venue in the area. Let’s burn it down.

L.A. remix trio extracts a few key slivers from Michael Jackson’s disco-werewolf epic and creates a blissfully stuttery electro-funk strut that Daft Punk should snap up anon.
-Spin Magazine

Villains are an LA party machine, revving up tracks like ‘Hunting For Witches’ into full-on bangers.

Daft Punk - Around The World (Villains More Cowbell DJ Edit)

Villains - Thrilla

Villains - Rock It

Shadow Of A Doubt

Yeah, that’s right: Moulinex on Cut Copy. Can’t get much better than that. Can it? I hadn’t heard much from the Munich based Moulinex since his Break Chops press. If you’re in Paris in the middle of March, you might want to head over to his show alongside Les Petits Pilous. That’d certainly be a gig to check out.

Cut Copy - Lights And Music (Moulinex Remix)

Let’s get some cheers for Agnoek, right? Some pretty killer tunes in that last post, eh? That’s why I had to get her over here: because Agnoek knows her shit. Locked. Well this is another one of her recommendations. Some more Crookers, and I know you people can’t get enough of ‘em. Too bad the only US date I see the Italian duo scheduled for is in New York.. and it’s months away. I guess patience is a virtue.

Kid Cudi - Day N Night (Crookers First Remix)

Chico Love is another Epic Banger, chillin’ out east with Neon Coyote. What I love about this crew so much is that they aren’t so formulaic. They’ll play what they like, at what tempo they want to play it, with whatever gangster, hipster, rocker, raver element they want with it. Their shit is banging, and crosses over genres and pretentious norms with relative ease in a form that always keeps me listening happily.

Kid Sister - Pro Nails (Chico Love Remix)

These Floorman remixes were sent to me a little while back, and I have no excuse for not posting them until now, but they aren’t slipping under the radar on my watch. It’s hard to keep track of everything, but I had a mental note there and I’m following through. Hot Chip seems to be getting a lot of attention lately after the release of their latest album, and I can see why.. They’re Hot Chip! These remixes do the group a lot of justice. They are nice and relaxed, and something you won’t usually find on this site. Solid as stone, this stuff makes me so happy.

Hot Chip - Boy From School (Floorman’s School Disco Edit)

Hot Chip - Hold On (Floorman’s Disco Freakshow Edit)

To finish this one off, I’m tossing out a Feist remix by none other than Britt, from Spoon. I didn’t know they were really in the remix business, as I haven’t seen any other track of it’s kind prior to now. But if this is in fact the first, I hope it’s of many to come. Taking one of my favorite tracks of Feist’s (and a lesser played one,) he made a delightful acoustic transformation of the original.

Feist - I Feel It All (Britt From Spoon Remix)

This Vampire Weekend remix of Cape Cod, by the Black Dominoes, reminds me of a lighthearted Paul Simon single. I’m not sure which one, but it might be off of “One Trick Pony,” which is a great album if you have yet to hear it. Regardless, I can practically taste the sugar cane rum when I listen to it. Makes me hate this weather. Chicago sucks right now. Bleh.

Vampire Weekend - Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa (Black Dominoes Remix)

I’ve been sitting on this one for a little while as well, Casino Inc’s version of “Da Funk” by Daft Punk. And I dug up another Revolte remix of theirs, this time of “Voyager.” On a side note, I was surprised the other day to turn on On Demand on my worthless ComCast cable box, click on the music section and sort through the electronica section only to find the video that Daft Punk created out of fan’s footage from last summer’s insane tour. Thought that was pretty cool… And that reminds me, I heard that Justice was having the Alive team create their new stage set, that we should probably be seeing at Coachella. Yeah. I bought my ticket, too.

Daft Punk - Da Funk (Casino Inc Amazing Disco Remix)

Daft Punk - Voyager (Revolte Remix)

FLYBYNIGHT & HEARTHROB DJs

In from Boston for the night, we have ourselves Red Foxx, Morgan Louis & Baltimoroder , AKA the HEARTHROB DJs, at Empire Liquors (1566 N. Milwaukee.) This should be a visual as well as audio spectacle from what I’ve been told.

It’d be nice to see the East Coast team in their own neighborhood, but don’t have the time or resources to get out there on a Tuesday night (I’m sure most can identify with the problem there,) so it’s a good thing that they’re coming to us. This is all courtesy of FLYBYNIGHT’s Willy Joy, Zebo and Capcom, who will also be gracing the wheels. RSVP Here. Afterparty at Evil Olive.

The Martin Brothers - Stoopit (Red Foxx Wamp Wamp Edit)

Daft Punk - Digital Love (Red Foxx’s Bmore Surprise Mix)

Alter Ego & Ghost Writers - Ghost Musick (Baltimoroder Remix)

Test Icicles - What’s Your Damage (Alan Braxe & Fred Falke Remix)(Morgan Louis Edit)

I think I have sufficiently been introduced by the last post. I am Agnoek and I am very honored that I’ve been asked to contribute to this site. To start this one off, Southern Fried Records have marketed the release of Armand van Helden’s “Je t’aime” on Valentine’s Day. They ordered some 9 remixes of this song. This one is from Riva Star, their next up and coming talent.

Armand Van Helden - Je T’aime (Riva Star Acid 80 Mix)

The Whip are also a Southern Fried signing and they will be releasing their first album X Mark Destination somewhere in March. Here the french edit of their song Divebomb, one of their classics from last year along with a Sons & Daughters remix of “Killer”.

Sons & Daughters - Killer (The Whip Remix)

The Whip - Divebomb (French Edit)

Some songs of the Toxic Avenger are really hard to find, and this old remix of “Space And The Wood” was one of those. Late of the Pier songs always receive massive remix coverage so that might be one of the reasons why this song was under everybody’s radar.

Late Of The Pier - Space And The Woods (Toxic Avenger Remix)

Thomas Bangalter’s take on DJ Medhi’s song Signature was a huge favorite of mine but this new take on the song by Dave Dresden is equally fine in my opinion.

DJ Medhi – Signatune (Dave Dresden Edit)

I think the most famous remix by Motor is their version of The Whip’s song “Trash”, but this remix of Forgotten Days deserves some attention as well..

Franz & Shape - Forgotten Days (Motor Remix)

Another band that are said to blowup over 2008 are The Ting Tings, the new incarnation of Dear Eskimo and this remix of their song “Great DJ” by Calvin Harris will surely help them. Calvin Harris provides the song with the great disco glitch which has made him famous.

The Ting Tings – Great DJ (Calvin Harris Remix)

One of the things that really surprises me is the amount of electro outfits that cover famous popsongs. Here is the Loose Cannons take on Janet Jackson’s What You Done 4 Me Lately.

The Loose Canons - WHYD4ML

Due to the massive amount of attention towards the SMD and Van She remixes of the song “Are You The One” by the Presets, the Cagedbaby remix has been thoroughly overlooked, but since it ain’t that bad at all and I think you can recover from the massive exposure to this song.

The Presets - Are You The One (Cagedbaby Mix)

Some of you are probably still relishing that Cat Powers show that came through Chicago the past week. For me, I’m still remembering the end of Juno, where this song is played to my ear’s delight, and as a perfect wrap up for a great movie. The critics weren’t wrong here. And with the spirit of the holiday at hand, I’ll start the post out with that single and follow it up with one of my favorite Mamas & Papas tracks, featuring Mama Cass Elliot. Gotta love the vaudeville piano influence. Then some Smoosh!

Cat Power - Sea Of Love

The Mamas & The Papas - Words Of Love

Smoosh - This Modern Love (Bloc Party Cover)

Brooklyn’s MGMT signed to Colombia Records after a successful EP, Time To Pretend (2005), and dropped Oracular Spectacular last year. These two tracks have been on repeat here for the last two days, especially “Kids”- I can not stop playing it for the life of me, which is off of Time To Pretend. It’s haunting and uplifting in a usually unusual way. Great lyricist. Finishing up here in the US for time being, you can see them in western Europe through March.

MGMT - Weekend Wars

MGMT - Kids

The Dusty Diamonds emerged on Myspace a few weeks ago, and showcased their Chromeo remix of “Fancy Footwork”. That song shapeshifts a lot throughout the 5 minutes it plays, I am loving the early 90’s “Nothing But A G Thang” vibe they got going on there at the tail end of the track.

Chromeo - Fancy Footwork (Dusty Diamonds Feet of Fury Remix)

One song that caught my attention last week was the Wax Stag “Short Road” remixes, that will be out soon on People In The Sky. Any chance to peep a new Metal On Metal song is always interesting, you might remember them from the Bloc Party “Flux” explosion. The Transylvanian trio are always an exciting listen. Wax Stag’s own remix of the song is a much more calming and fluid composition.

Wax Stag - Short Road (Wax Stag Remix)

Wax Stag - Short Road (Metal On Metal Remix)

This one was a recommendation by my buddy, Agnoek, the other day. The Replicants are an Anglo-French group, donning their name from pseudo-science fiction influences, composed of MC Andrew Valentine and Ernest Saint Laurent. Some cool stuff there, but just take a look at what The Black Ghosts do with the original. It only further cements them as some of the most cutting-edge and inspiring artists around. They kill it. If you’re in London tomorrow, get your ass to the Herve show. They’ll be there, you lucky bastards.

The Replicants - User

The Replicants - User (Black Ghosts Remix)

I’ve never gotten around to posting any PNAU, and it’s a solid shame. After recently stumbling upon their track, “Embrace”, featuring Ladyhawk, I’m sure you’ll find a happy home in your library for it.

With Diplo in town tonight we’re going to have to toss up a track to get people over to Smartbar. In other news, you can go to Lava tonight to see Pase Rock for The Booty Up, and then afterwards to Evil Olive to see even more. Winter Heat will have some sick hip hop icons over at Abbey Pub. If you didn’t figure out the Yeasayer show before now, don’t bother- it’s sold out. Yep, tomorrow’s show, too. Bummer. Go to the Numark show at Lava. And in case I don’t do a post beforehand- Cat Power is on Sunday (also sold out), with an afterparty over at Evil Olive once again.

Black Lips - Veni Vedi Veci (Diplo Remix)

Mr Scruff & Spank Rock - 6

Yeasayer - 2080

Cat Power - The Greatest

Is it me, or does this Beyond the Wizard’s Sleeve song remind you somewhat of Dan the Automator’s work on Deltron 3030? Those blaring brass notes throw me back to ‘Positive Contact’ for a short spell there. I’m always excited to see more stuff from their direction. Also, this song helps me showcase this artwork I stumbled on a few days ago.

Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve - Get Ready To Fly

It seems that the Crookers have been gaining a lot of momentum, judging by who’s coming here for what. So I’m gonna give you all a little bit more of what you want. That’s kind of the idea, right? This one mixes together two of my higher expectations for the year in one song: both the Crookers and Cazals. I’m loving the Beetroots teaser in the middle of it. Hopefully, the Crookers will be sticking around the US for a tour after their NY gig in June. We’ll see.

Cazals - Life Is Boring (Crookers Remix)

The latest Treasure Fingers track is tricked out like an LA Riots remix, start to finish. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s obvious in the vocal edits that there was some influence to it. For sure. Compare it with the Riots’ Keoki remix that spread across the internet a little while ago. In other news, I’m still waiting for the “get drunk/get fucked” track that I heard a while back to find it’s way to my desktop. Gracias, Nibbons.

One Hand Loves The Other - Tortoise (Treasure Fingers Remix)

Miami Horror always has the same sort of spring break, fuck-it-all feel to each track produced. “This Heart Attack” would set the mood in a similar manner to that of his “Mr. Ice Cream” rehash, except for the new wave core. More Breakfast Club, less Vice City if that makes any sense whatsoever.. For a bonus, here’s the Dirty Secrets remix in case you missed that crown jewel of a DJ set.

Faker - This Heart Attack (Miami Horror Remix)

The Dirty Secrets - 5 Feet Of Snow (Miami Horror Remix)

Nu Ravers On The Block hangin’ tough up in Canada, throwing parties with the likes of thee Bang Gang and Duke Dumont, both shows coming up in March. Aside from doing gigs, however, they also find time to throw together pulse pounding tracks for you to jam to. Check this one out.

HEARTSREVOLUTION - C.Y.O.A. (NROTB Remix Revolution)

Poney Poney sent me a copy of their Teenagers remix. I have yet to hear much more teens mixes done since the album was dropped. I guess the anticipation was too great for most people. I’m definitely liking the song, almost as much as the Bitchee Bitchee Ya Ya Ya edit of “Junior”. I really like that one. But what I really want is to get a hand on Poney Poney’s Don Rimini remix that is, as far as I know, only on this site.

The Teenagers - Love No (Poney Poney Emotion Remix)

Poney Poney - Junior (Bitchee Bitchee Ya Ya Ya Remix)

What better to close out a post to than with The Field. Ain’t nothing wrong here, enjoy this one on a long drive somewhere annoying. Oh, and this one is a 15 minutes song. Little overkill, but I can still get down to it.

The Field - Night

The Whip threw out a remix of one of my favorite songs of theirs, done by none other than the Bloody Beetroots! Though I’m usually a huge fan of their work, I’d have to say that I love the original so much that I can’t really bear to part with that context of the song. The Whip told me they’re working on a US tour. Oh, and the Bloody Beetroots are going to be with MSTRKRFT & LA Riots at that Vision show. Something I was previously unaware of…

The Whip - Trash

The Whip - Trash (Bloody Beetroots Remix)

Here’s a nice little remix that Roccanova threw at me. One of MSTRKRFT’s classics remixed in their own style fit for any floor, keeping me even more excited for the show that’s coming up in the next few weeks. I still can’t believe that it’s going to be at Vision- that club is more known for having the likes of Sasha and ATB than the more well known electro heads. I included an older MSTRKRFT remix that they mixed up as well: She’s Good for Business.

MSTRKRFT - Neon Knights (Roccanova Remix)

MSTRKRFT - She’s Good For Business (Roccanova Remix)

On to another banger. Out of Fresno, Colorsucker gave me a song the other day. This is one of the more breakneck, electro jams that I’ve listened to in a while: grimy 8bit thuds with a sharp kicksnare. It’s sure to get attention when played.

Colorsucker - Beautiful Technicolor

Holy Hell! More Neon Coyote on the way here. Probably the best Yelle remix I’ve heard in a fat minute, solidifying these guys in my top five for overall remix mastery. I hope it’s as easy for them to create these songs as it is for me to get lost in them, because I want more. Soon. It’s not very often I’ll keep a ten minute song on repeat..

Yelle - Ce Jeu (Neon Coyote’s Destroyed Remix).mp3

Cassie - Me & You (Thoroughly Banging Neon Coyote Remix)

I don’t think I could forgive myself for not throwing up the Tommie Sunshine remix. How can you go wrong combining these two? Tommie Sunshine will also be gracing Smartbar with Bald Eagle on the 22nd.

Tommie Sunshine - Dance Among The Ruins (Toxic Avenger Remix)

Here’s a hip hop gem that I’ve had buried in my hard drive since I bought the album at their show in Phoenix. They were there with a few of the Galapagos4 crew (Robust, Qwel, etc.) This track has one of the sickest big band jazz backbones to it, I can practically see the kids breakdancing in zoot suits to it. What a sight. Straight off of Mestizo & Mike Gao’s album Blindfaith, here’s Pickup 52’s.

Mesizo & Mike Gao - Pickup 52’s

Luck on Strike threw together their own take on Jackson & His Computer Band’s “Arpeggio”. Solid assembly, only to break it apart at the two minute marker and piece it all back together for it’s final glory. Reminds me a little of the D.A.N.C.E. remix that MSTRKRFT.

Luck On Strike VS Jackson & His Computer Band - Arpeggio
