What is truly amazing about Robert Johnson (1911-1938) is that all of his music still influences blues and rock artists of our era, yet was recorded over the course of five sessions that each lasted a single day. He was only 27 when he died, and many have filled in the holes in his biography with robust legend. One of the foremost tells of Johnson at the crossroads, selling his soul to the devil for his guitar skills.
The beauty is in it’s simplicity, but Johnson’s music can also be identified as the foundation for much of the blues and rock throughout the 20th century. It’s relaxing and enjoyable like other traditional delta blues, but holds an undeniably eerie quality at the same time. Johnson was a man who had a lot of demons, and this manifests itself in his blues. -Matt
