I have been anticipating this release for a while. Two weeks ago, a collection of artists threw together an album solely of Pixies covers, a bold, challenging & previously unexplored territory. “Dig For Fire” features the likes of Mogwai, British Sea Power, They Might Be Giants & other well known- to lesser known rock groups.
Where the album succeeds in a few tracks, it falls behind in others. Only to be expected. Frank Black is a god on wheels, recreating his work shouldn’t be an easy task. I would have preferred to see some more electronic takes and rehashes. But overall, hearts were in the right places- the main ingredient in making any great tribute album. And if this doesn’t satisfy the diehards, maybe it will create new fans for one of the greatest & most influential rock groups of all time.
Mogwai – Gouge Away
British Sea Power – Caribou
Morning Theft – Ana
kNIFE and fORK – Motorway To Roswell
