No More Weak Ends

Alright! DJ Funk will be throwing a party tonight over at Smartbar with Reid Speed, Chris B, Keith Mackenzie, Local Hero & Serch. Can’t go wrong with Funk, really. He’s a Chicago legend- and if anybody can get a pop-locking, booty-house party going, it’s him.

To make things even more complicated, Flosstradamus will be rocking it over at Underground. Million $ Mano will also be over there along with Kyler Mendoza. I’ve yet to see Mano, and from what I’ve heard so far that’s a bummer. I’d get there early, because you don’t want to find your sorry ass sitting outside freezing, take it from me. If Flossy-D is playing at Underground, then it’s gonna be a big show.

Uniting the hip hop community this weekend, we have I Love Haters kicking off at Subterranean on Friday night. There’s a whole list of artists showing up, including Mic Terror, Mano, Kid Static + Yea Big, Shala, DJ Trew, Zebo, Capcom, Maker, Joey Potts, Peabe, Pr3-Frosh, Platinum & Tek. All on stage at the same time!!! Crazy!! No, I’m just kidding- we’re not trying to have any seizures on our hands tomorrow. It’s a ten dollar cover for all of that entertainment, well worth the price.

Dark Wave Disco in the house again at Subteranean on Satuday night, for Blow The Speakers featuring Mark Gertz, Trancid, Greg Corner & Kid Color. Panic Films on the visuals and CT Couture hosting once again.

This weekend is a good one for hip hop enthusiasts across the city. Juice (the unsigned), Mass Hysteria, Que Billah, Astonish, Matlock, Robust, Y.E.S., The Womb, Esohel, Lungz & DJ Sek One will be popping off at the Underpass for a Celebration of Greatness. Some local heavyhitters are on that lineup. Robust has always been a favorite of mine within the city, I’d like to check his set out once again.

Trick Or Treat

Alright. Let’s stick on The Bloody Beetroots for another minute. These tracks just keep getting better and better the more I dig them up. This is about as raw as it gets here. Really cool stuff.

The Bloody Beetroots - Ezekiel Eats Red Hoodie

And on to Shinichi Osawa. Right after a minute into it the guitar sample drops like a Junkie XL track on “Today”, rolling over and over again. Though the vocal sample gets a little redudant towards the end, that takes nothing away from how effortlessly orchestrated the buildups are. Easily one of the best songs I’ve found all week.

ShinichiOsawa -StarGuitar.mp3

Swiss based Headman is another artist I’ve found this week. This David Gilmour Girls remix is stellar. “It never gets easy and now it gets cold” is a truth that we in Chicago are going to have to get used to once again.

David Gilmour Girls - Young Rats (Headman Edit)

Superlaser turned me on to Moulinex a day or two ago. He’s a Munich based producer that’s gaining popularity. Xinobi (mixtape posted yesterday) does a nice little remix of this track, but I’ve yet to get my hands on it. You can find it on his myspace profile if you wanna peep it.

Moulinex - Breakchops

LA Riots was one of the best sets I’ve seen recently. They annihilated Smart Bar the other day. It’s cool to meet people so into their music and the global scene as it is. Plus, who is mixing Photek tracks like this? Wow. I’ll throw the original in just for the full effect. They told me of future remixes to come that can guarantee a hotspot on this site for a while to come now. Keep a lookout for ‘em.

Photek - Love And War (LA Riots Mix)

Photek - Love And War

And to wind things down a bit, here’s one of my favorite, more mellow title-track of LCD Soundsystem’s. “The worst is all the lovely weather. I’m sad, it isn’t raining. The coffee isn’t even bitter, because, what’s the difference?” Can it get any better than LCD?

LCD Soundsystem - Someone Great

Witches Ain’t Shit II

Here it is. This is where I’ll be at with my sub-par costume. Chi-town rep Flossy-D will be rocking out with Amanda Blank, the terror on the mic from way out east (”I’m raw like Kelly Bundy, I keep that shit nasty.”), some crazy Philly-pop Sweatheart (click the link, haha.) & Major Taylor.

The party is 18 and up, which is hella cool if you’re under 21, and the extravaganza is over at Subterranean. There’s free Sparks- dear god! Oh! Good old Clayton Hauck (everyoneisfamous.com) will be there snappin’ shots off as well as klickingandscreaming.com. So.. bring your game face and 5 bucks if you have costume- 7 bucks if you’re shit outta luck. Make it happen, people!

DJ Autobot - Laffy Taffy (Flosstradamus Remix)

Spank Rock - Bump (Pink Skull Remix)

Bjork - Earth Intruders (Spank Rock Remix)

Sweatheart - Dream Beaver

Xinobi Likes Heavy Metal

Ok folks, I’m gonna continue on the mixtape bender I’ve been sending you on the past day or two. Let me introduce you to a Portugese gentleman who goes by the name Xinobi. I like Xinobi. And if Xinobi likes heavy metal, and I follow my little logic board diagram right.. then that means that I like heavy metal! But this isn’t heavy metal whatsoever, and if it was I probably wouldn’t like it at all. I’m sorry if I’m confusing you.

On the real though. The mix is pretty solid- even though some of it’s content is a little ambiguous and altogether unknown even by the artist himself. “There’s some missing names on the playlist cause i’m dumb enough to, when improvising during the mix, forget the names of some tracks and artists i’m playing for the firstime…” Xinobi says “Who cares anyway… ” Think of it as a puzzle or something.

Xinobi - BMX

What’s Going On Tonite??

Another kickass DJ Bald Eagle gig tonite. That’s what. At where else, but the Smart Bar? And I’m so torn between this and Dashboard Confessional over at House Of Blues tonite.. What am I to do???? They’re so dreamy!! Ha, I’d rather stay at home and administer myself a rum enema.

This is another “When The Eagle Meets The Wolf” event with Mr. Wolf & DJ Stv Slv. Bald Eagle rocks out on such a regular basis that it’s safe to say any event thrown is solid gold, and though I’m a huge Outdanced! fan, i might just have to bypass it this week. Or just get wasted and drive back and forth between them. Haha. I’m just kidding.

And, of course, what kind of week would it be in Chicago without the Outdanced! events? It is Tuesday, once again. And that means that more debauchery from the Chicago’s “premier queer dance party”. This week we have Whitey & Rory “Trash” Phillips- swinging through town on the “Whitey Vs. America Tour”. This tour will be without Peaches- (Thank god). Alongside those two you’ll find Brilliant Pebbles & Jordan Z. The show is at Funky Buddha, just like every week after week after week after week. Woohah.

Steve A & Steve B are Cool Kid’s Can’t Die. They’re unsigned and straight out of Italy. They rock a few monthly gigs in Bologna, Venice & Milan and are another reason why Italy kicks ass.

The mixtape that I posted below features the likes of !!!, Hot Chip, Riot in Belgium, SMD, some sick little Klaxons remixes- and so forth. Rough electro edges over indie dance rock surfaces. Enjoy.

Hailing from Philly without the cheesy Fresh Prince theme-song, Michael Patrick, of dEsigner drugs, threw a couple of tracks my way. They’re pretty sick, too. “Sex up my brain” hits all the right notes for me. The tail end of that track winds down very nicely. The second installment of their Datamix series is a nice grab-bag as well.

Stars @ The Vic [11/02]

I will not be a spaz on Friday, and this is a far-cry from what I normally find myself doing. I will show up, on time, at the Vic Theatre eagerly anticipating an enchanting performance that Stars has in store for us. The anticipation has been building for a while now, I even find myself a little surprised to find that it has crept up on me so quickly. This month will be filled with good shows, but as far as I am concerned, this will probably be the best one to grace Chicago.

As another group out of Canada coming through, this time being Montreal instead of Toronto, Stars are composed of Torquil Campbell, Chris Seligman, Amy Millan, Evan Cranley & Patrick McGee. They call themselves “melodramatic popular song” on their Myspace page, yet I feel that this doesn’t do them much credit. Only making them sound like a boring and whiney 90’s group like the Cranberries- two traits that I won’t attribute them. Their last album “In Our Bedroom After the War” is a nice, sensuous and delicate work with all the charm to win over anyone- regardless how cold a heart they may have.

You can find an entire copy of their NPR Live Podcast performance on Counting Stars On The Ceiling. You’ll have to download the tracks individually, but it’s worth it. Two songs that I post below are from their latest album. The other two are remixes that I fell in love with a few months back.

Stars - The Night Starts Here

Stars - My Favorite Book

Stars - Sleep Tonight (Junior Boys Remix)

Stars - Your Ex-Lover Is Dead (Final Fantasy Remix)
